All the Fish, Sally Gabori, NGV

The artwork, All the Fish by Sally Gabori painted on canvas immediately caught my eye. Sally was born in 1924 and grew up on Bentinck Island, where she had little contact with the outside world. Sally moved to Mornington Island in her early 20’s, where at 81 years of age decided to start painting. She is now one of Australia’s most prolific Indigenous Artists. Her late start to painting combined with how important her works are within Australia’s art scene is testament to her ability to create exciting artworks.

Sally’s paintings depict her life on Bentinck Island, specifically water life and the rich hunting culture. What interested me most about Sally’s life as well as her inspiration are the fish traps, which are rock walls placed within a flowing area of ocean. They take on organic shapes winding and bending through shallow waters. Her ability to convey this movement is what I love most about her work.

Acknowledgement of Country

I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land in which I practice and live on the Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung language groups of the eastern Kulin nations. I would also like to acknowledge the traditional owners of my homeland Boorloo (Perth), the Whajuk Noongar Boodja in which I was raised. I also acknowledge and pay my respects to both traditional owners’ ancestors both past and present.
